Mian Channu—At least 13 people, including 7
children, were killed, over 60 injured and
several still missing, when a huge blast rocked
Mian Channu near here, police said Monday. The
blast occurred at 09:52 a.m. in a house of a
local school teacher in Chak Number 12/129 L,
Tehsil Mian Channu, District Khanewal. Witnesses
however said 150 children were present in the
compound of which 7 were killed and several were
still trapped under the debris.
Islamabad —President Asif Ali Zardari said on
Monday that the Government’s entire focus will
now shift to the rehabilitation of displaced
persons and rebuilding of the damaged
infrastructure in Malakand Division.
Peshawar—Six more militants were gunned down and
around dozen others injured during a clash with
the security forces on Monday as operation
Rah-e-Najaat was in progress in South Waziristan
agency while the Army troops continued search
and clearance operation in various parts of Swat
and recovered huge ammunition besides
apprehending a few culprits during the ongoing
operation Rah-e-Rast in volatile Malakand.
Washington—US President Barack Obama said in an
interview to be aired that he has ordered a
probe into attempts to quash an investigation
into the mass execution of Taliban prisoners in
Afghanistan.
Karachi—The future of the present Local
Government System (LGS) is yet not decided by
two main parties in Sindh province, especially
in Karachi. According to informed sources the
talks between leadership of People’s Party and
MQM were not concluded decisively.
The cycles of social despondency and economic
slump are not un-arrestable. As a cure both
these deficiencies need strong doze of pragmatic
planning and timely achievement of settled
targets of progress. And the constitution of a
state/nation is always a powerful national guide
and international document of equality and civil
supremacy. The 1973 Constitution of Pakistan
bears all lofty qualities and guarantees. How
far those merits have actually been practised is
another question needing a separate debate.
Islamabad—Chief Justice of Pakistan Iftikhar
Muhammad Chaudhry has directed the government to
present today evidence in support of the
allegations leveled against Hafiz Muhammad Saeed
in December, 2008, chief of proscribed religious
outfit, Jamaat-ud-Dawat (JUD).
