New judicial policy
Courts dispose of 330,122 cases
Islamabad—Registrar Supreme Court of Pakistan,
Secretary National Judicial Policy Making Committee, Dr. Faqir
Hussain on Friday disclosed that after the implementation of new
judicial policy, the courts have disposed of 330,122 cases across
the country.
In a press briefing at Supreme Court the registrar said that in the
month of June 266,641 new cases were also instituted in the courts.
“There were 1,650,005 cases pending in the courts on June 31”, he
said.
He said that the new judicial policy aims to clear the backing of
cases at all level of the judiciary and eradicate corruption.
To achieve the purpose of clearance of backlog, the policy set
timeline for the disposal of the cases”, he added.
He said that a very positive response at all level of judiciary in
disposing of the cases has been received to the Committee.
The commitment to expedite disposal of cases as par policy time
framework by the Judges is a vital national cause for which they are
striving hard to achieve the targets”, Dr. Faqir Hussain stated.
Giving the details of the cases pending in the Supreme Court he said
that there were 18,392 cases pending in the Supreme Court of
Pakistan on May 31, 2009, which were further increased by
institution of 1920 new cases during the month. He said that the
pendenecy was reduced to 17,380 cases by June 30, 2009 disposing of
2,932 cases by the Supreme Court of Pakistan.
The Registrar said that the backlog of cases in the Federal Shariat
Court was 1,993 on May 31, 2009 which was further increased by
institution of 89 new cases by June 30 2009. He added that the
pendenecy was reduced to 1,966 cases by June 30, 2009 disposing of
116 cases by the Federal Shariat Court during the month of June.
Dr. Faqir Hussain stated that the backlog of the criminal cases in
the Lahore High Court was 106,724 on May 31, 2009, further increased
by institution of 12,803 new cases during the month of June, 2009.
He added that the Lahore High Court disposed of 28,521 cases,
leaving balance of 91,006 cases.
He said the subordinate judiciary in province of Punjab has a
backlog of 1,260,374 of criminal and civil cases, which was further
increased by institution of 208,26o new cases during the month of
June 2009. “The subordinate courts disposed of 241,728 cases,
leaving balance of pending cases of 1,226,906”, he disclosed.
The Registrar said that the backlog of the criminal and civil cases
in the High Court of Sindh was 24,044 on May 31, 2009, further
increased by institution of 1,864 new cases during the month of
June, 2009.
He said the court disposed of 1,338 cases, leaving balance of 24,570
cases. “The subordinate judiciary in the province of Sindh has a
backlog of 142,084 of criminal and civil cases, which was further
increased by institution of 17,607 new cases during the month of
June, 2009”, he stated.
He added the subordinate courts disposed of 20,155 cases, leaving
balance of pending cases of 139,536.
The Supreme Court registrar said a conference on implementation of
the national judicial policy is scheduled to be held on July 4-5 in
Islamabad to educate the stakeholders about the national judicial
policy and ascertaining their responses and feedback for putting the
justice system on the right track.
He said that the conference will be attended by the judges of the
Supreme Court, chief justices of the high courts, attorney general,
advocate generals, federal, provincial law, finance, secretaries,
chief secretaries, provincial home secretaries, police inspector
generals, representatives of bars etc.
He said Chief Justice Mr. Justice Iftikhar Mohammad Chaudhry will
chair the inaugural and concluding sessions of the conference.—NNI
