We can’t afford more provinces: Gilani

Islamabad—Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani has said that PPP has decided not to create more provinces as we do not want to destabilize the country.

Talking to newsmen after addressing the convocation of Islamabad Model College for Women F-10/2 here Friday, he said Pakistan is passing through most difficult situation in the history. The Prime Minister said Pakistan is a frontline state and is fighting against terrorism. He said the country is also facing the challenges of economy and loadshedding and we have to focus on strengthen of the country, federation and the economy.

Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani said talking about more provinces would create pandora box. He said without the constitutional amendment no province can be created and this is not the right time for the constitutional amendment and even the parties are not united in this regard. He said that the Government has decided to not increase the number of provinces in the prevailing situation.

Gilani said Pakistan wants friendly relations with all its neighbouring countries including India, Iran and Afghanistan.

To a question about his upcoming meeting with Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh at Sharm-e-Sheikh, he said it a positive step and expressed the hope that confidence building measures like these will yield positive results.

To a question about the military operation, the Prime Minister said the security forces by rendering great sacrifices have cleared many of the areas of militants and cantonments will be established in Swat and Buner to ensure permanent presence of the military there.

He said steps will also be taken for the capacity building of the police force and good governance will be ensured so that the extremist elements do not crop up again.

Answering a question about US operation in Helmand province of Afghanistan, he said he talked with the French delegation yesterday and already conveyed to the US Congressmen that bringing more troops in Afghanistan will destabilize situation in Balochistan. He said they had assured that they will not let the extremists and terrorists to cross into Pakistani territory and destabilize the situation.

Earlier, addressing the ceremony the Prime Minister Syed Yousaf Raza Gilani said that the government is fully alive to the importance of education and striving hard to enhance literacy rate in the country.
