Rawalpindi—The military said on Wednesday that
11 militants and four soldiers were killed
during the last 24 hours of an air and ground
offensive against the Taliban in Malakand. It is
impossible to confirm such tolls independently,
which add up to more than 750 dead militants
over the last 17 days in the northwest. But it
was the lowest single day toll announced by the
military since it launched an offensive in Swat
last week.
Islamabad—Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani
and the Afghan President Hamid Karzai expressed
the resolve to work collectively for the
development, prosperity and security of the
region.

objective to avoid any negative effect while
ensuring elimination of militants.

the Army to make precise strikes against the
militants in Swat and adjacent areas to avoid
collateral damage even at the expense of taking
risks.
United Nations—Secretary-general Ban Ki-moon
backed Pakistan’s fight against extremism and
expressed “confidence and trust” in President
Asif Ali Zardari at a meeting on Tuesday in
which the Pakistani leader appealed for global
aid to care for over one million civilians
displaced from the troubled Swat valley.
