Pak economy suffers over $68b loss due to Afghan turmoil

Lahore—Pak economy has so far suffered irreparable loss of $68 billion directly and indirectly due to turmoil in Afghanistan. Speaking as a chief guest at a seminar on “The Role of Economy Towards Survival of the Country” in connection Pakistan Day here, founder chairman Pak-US Business Council and VP SAARC CCI Iftikhar Ali Malik said it is on record that Pakistan is the only country in the world which has not only suffered tremendous economic loss but also huge human loss in the war against terrorism.

IMF’s Kahn warns about wasteland of unemployment

Geneva—International Monetary Fund Managing Director Dominique Strauss-Kahn said the situation in the world economy is “dire” and raised the specter of “a wasteland of unemployment” unless more action is taken. Speaking at the International Labour Organization in Geneva, Strauss-Kahn said the crisis threatens to cast millions back into poverty, risking social unrest and even wars.

PTCL to continue detailed billing for three months

Islamabad—In upholding the government decision to celebrate 2009 as the “Environment Year” the Pakistan Telecommunication Company Limited (PTCL) has embarked on introducing a new billing format for its customers, whereby the multiple page bills would be substituted by a single page with all the essential details.

Islamic Insurance to focus on Pakistan

Dubai—Islamic Insurance will stay focused on developing its affiliated firms in Pakistan and Syria besides increasing its market share in the local market, company chairman Sheikh Abdullah bin Thani al-Thani has said. “We are actively pursuing a three-year strategic plan until 2012 to develop our portfolios,” he said at the company’s ordinary general assembly meeting yesterday. Sheikh Abdullah said Islamic Insurance generated a gross premium income of QR168mn last year compared with QR159.4mn in 2007. Net profit earned by the company last year was QR84.6mn. Earnings per share (EPS) stood at QR4.57.

UAE to host Friends of Pakistan meeting in April

Abu Dhabi—Friends of Democratic Pakistan meeting will be held in the UAE in the first week of April 2009, said Pakistan’s Ambassador at Large, Javed Malik, who is assigned as a Special Envoy of the Friends of Democratic Pakistan Group. This will be part of the preparatory meetings leading up to the Ministerial level talks that will take place in Tokyo on 17th April 2009.
