Taxtile value-addition planned: Farooq

Sialkot—Federal Textile Minister Rana M. Farooq Tariq Saeed Khan has said that a comprehensive strategy is being evolved to strengthen value-addition chain in textile sector.

Speaking as chief guest at a seminar on “Emerging Trends/issues in Sports Wear Industry held in collaboration with Mir Khalil-ur-Rehman Memorial Society, Pakistan Readymade Garment Manufacturers Association and that Pakistan Hosiery Manufacturer Association here on Monday, he revealed that Pakistan would complete process of its whole cotton crop and convert it into value-addition for earning US 40 billion dollars.

The government was making strenuous efforts for redressal of the problems like shortage of electricity, Sui gas load shedding, skilled manpower, technology and infrastructure under its vision and commitment, he added.

The federal minister said that we will overcome these problems with the active cooperation of the business community of this industry.

The Textile Ministry has already taken various steps for resolving the problems being confronted by the industry and under human resource development programme as many as 40,000 skilled labour would be produced under its SMOT programme, he disclosed.

Rana Farooq said that this programme has already been introduced in Karachi, Lahore and Faisalabad while it would be expanded to sub-sectors of ginning, weaving and processing for ensuring skilled manpower.

The Minister further stated that we are competing with India, China, and Bangladesh and government was making hectic efforts for the promotion of exports adding that Rs.40 billion have been given to exporters under Research and Development programme for enabling them for competition but government was considering to extend this support. The government has concentrated on strengthening the value chain of textile sector and special attention has already been accorded on the production of pure cotton as well as spinning; weaving and value-addition would be tracked on right direction. On this occasion, the Textile Minister announced that a “Garment City” would be established in Sialkot shortly keeping in view the contribution of the business community of this export-orient city and hub of the cottage industry of the country. —APP
