Justice eluding parents of Wular lake boat capsize
victims
Islamabad— In occupied Kashmir, the parents of the
students who drowned in Wular lake on May 30, 2006 have threatened
to stage protests outside the Indian Parliament in New Delhi if the
guilty Navy officials were not punished.
In 2006, 22 persons including 20 children of Burning Candle Public
School, Handwara, drowned in Wular Lake due to the negligence of
Indian Navy officials manning the lake, KMS reported.
Nearly forty children in the age group of seven to eight were taken
for a boat ride in the lake by the navy personnel, who ignored the
prohibition of not venturing into waters before 4:00 pm because of
high intensity waves. Two more youth of the area were killed when
army opened fire on the people protesting against the incident.
Following the massive protests, the puppet administration ordered an
inquiry into the mishap. The inquiry officer in his report held four
navy officials, Lt K S Nehra, officer incharge Naval Det (Marcos)
Watlab, Krishan Khulvi, boat operators Raj Ram and Ganishan and the
school principal responsible for the disaster.
As justice continues to elude these parents, they have given an
ultimatum of one month to the puppet regime to start criminal
proceedings against the perpetrators recommended by judicial probe
headed by Justice Tariq Naqashbandi.
“If the guilty Navy officials are not punished we will stage
protests and take the matter to the Indian Parliament,” said Ghulam
Nabi who heads the campaign of these parents for justice under the
banner of Wular Martyrs committee. He further pointed out that the
regime was using dilly dally tactics in order to save the skin of
the indicted officials.
Accepting the inquiry report regarding the incident, the puppet
Chief Minister, Ghulam Nabi Azad ordered action against the
officials but nothing has been done so far. —APP
