Pak, India urged to dismantle nuclear weapons
Staff Reporter
Islamabad—Speakers, here, at a discussion organized to mark the
tenth anniversary of the testing of the nuclear weapons by India and
Pakistan in May 1998, urged the need for dismantling the nuclear
armaments in order to make the world a safer place.
The discussion was organized by Citizen Peace Committee and Pakistan
Peace Coalition at the SAFMA media center.
Research Fellow at SDPI, Mr. A.H Nayyar in his opening remarks
painted the dismal picture of the world in the presence of the
nuclear warheads. He shed light on the past activities of the
Citizen Peace Committee and Pakistan Peace Coalition, which have
been working for peace in South Asia through disarmament. He said
that both India and Pakistan have stockpiled weapons of mass
destruction in hundreds, and they are still entangled in the nuclear
race, which is not a good omen for the region.
Renowned analyst, Let Gen ® Talat Masood observed in his remarks
said that nuclear disarmament is desirable, which must be promoted,
however, he noted that certain powerful countries like the USA and
Israel do not reduce the number of their nuclear weapons, and hence
leave the new members of the nuclear club with no option but to go
ahead with their nuclear programs. He said that Pakistan should work
for the internal stability, ensure that democracy flourishes, which
would be the best deterrent than nuclear armaments.
Political Scientist, Mr. Inayatullah said that there are five
threats, which are hovering the entire humanity, and the nuclear
weapons are one of these threats. He said that still there is silver
lining in the clouds, as the world over, the peace activists have
sprung up against the nuclearisation.
