KCCI wants one regulator for operators, freight forwarders

Karachi—Karachi Chamber of Commerce and Industry has expressed serious concern that terminals are imposing penalties and enhance days of detention of containers at ports. The concern echoed during 3rd meeting of Shipping and Multimodal Transport, held at KCCI, said a KCCI statement here on Friday.

Khawaja Tanveer Ahmed, Collector of Customs (Care) was said to be the chief guest on the occasion. Nasir Mehmood, Chairman of the Sub-Committee warmly welcomed the Chief guest as well as terminal operators and members of Managing Committee and Sub-Committee.

Mr Mehmood told the meeting that all terminal operators work under Collectorate Care , Shipping Lines/Agents (SL/A) under Collectorate Preventive and Freight Forwarders (FF) under Ministry of Commerce. He suggested that these bodies should come under one regulatory body and this suggestion was also sent to the Government of Pakistan to get SL/A, FF and terminal operators under single regulatory authority/body for monitoring their activities and resolving day-to-day problems being faced by consignees/traders.

During the said meeting , Khawaja Tanveer Ahmed suggested Terminal Operators to waive Rs 5000 and Rs 10,000 penalties from FR containers, detention duration at ports to enhance to 7 days from 5 days and widen spaces at ports not taking much time in grounding and clearance of containers in favour of our country in view of current economic and political situation affecting the trade and business, then and there agreed by COO/CEOs of all terminal operators. This meeting was also attended by Iftikhar Ahmed Sheikh, Senior Vice President-KCCI, Muhammad Haroon Agar, Vice President-KCCI, Manzoor Memon, Additional Collector Customs (Care), Changez H. Niazi, CEO-QICT, Captain Zafar Iqbal Awan, CEO-PICT, Captain Syed Rashid Jamil, COO-KICT.

Nasir Mehmood remarked this achievement as a vital for all of us and appreciated the problems resolved at the spot with the hard and devoted efforts of the members of Managing Committee and KCCI. Haroon Agar highlighted various issues pertaining to the shipping industry and appreciated the efforts being made by Khawaja Tanveer Ahmed for betterment of systems at customs for minimizing the duration of documentation and facilitating through online registration and documentation system to traders as informed during the meeting by Collector.—APP
