Xiangshui, China—Three workers at a hydropower
dam in this remote, mountainous pocket of
southwest China were in the final stages of
evacuation in preparation for the dreaded “quake
lake” flood.
Seoul— North Korea accused South Korea Friday of
restarting a propaganda war, warning of an
“uncontrollable catastrophic phase” in relations
between the two neighbours. The North’s military
sent a message to Seoul accusing it of using
balloons to send propaganda leaflets across the
heavily fortified inter-Korean border, saying
this was an “intolerable provocative act” that
must stop immediately.
Yokohama— Africa’s leaders and Japan pledged
Friday to ramp up the continent’s food
production, seeking to put the crisis of
spiralling prices firmly on the agenda of the
Group of Eight rich nations.Wrapping up a
three-day summit in Yokohama, near Tokyo, Japan
also won renewed support for its top foreign
policy goal—securing a permanent seat at the UN
Security Council—which has been blocked under
pressure from China.
Islamabad— In occupied Kashmir, the parents of
the students who drowned in Wular lake on May
30, 2006 have threatened to stage protests
outside the Indian Parliament in New Delhi if
the guilty Navy officials were not punished.
Rome— Flooding and mudslides left at least two
people dead in northern Italy after heavy rains
that also hit France and Belgium, reports said,
with dangerous weather likely to continue on
Friday. A mudslide in Villar Pelice near the
northern Italian city of Turin swept away a
house, killing an old man inside it, civil
protection authorities said. A second person was
found dead in a car also ught up in the
mudslide.
