POA to organise inter school tournaments
Lahore—Punjab Olympic Association (POA) will leap
forward to revive sports in educational institutions by organising
inter school sports tournaments from October 17 to 19.
This was stated by President, POA, Syed Shahid Ali Shah after a
general council meeting of the body here on Wednesday. Also present
were Secretary, POA, Idris Haider Khawaja and Secretary, Sports
Punjab, Syed Nunawar Abbas. Shahid said the meeting was of the view
that sports activities have almost finished in the educational
institutions which has resulted in the overall decline of the
sports.
“POA has been stressing the need for re-organising sports
competitions in schools for the last many years and now we have
decided to turn this idea into reality by having inter school sports
tournaments”, he added.
Boys and girls events to be contested in the tournaments are
athletics, badminton, basketball, netball, basketball baseball,
softball, swimming, football and table tennis.
“ We will be carrying forward this activity with the holding of
inter collegiate sports tournaments from October 24 at 26 to explore
the talent of college students “, he added.
Athletics, badminton, basketball, hockey, swimming, table tennis and
volleyball competitions will be held, he said.
“The objective of organising these events in October is to give
ample time to the students to fully prepare and to compete in a
weather which is suitable for sports activities “, he said. Idris
Haider Khawaja speaking on the occasion said the President, POA , in
a kind gesture had already given Rs 5000 to each affiliated units
which had organised sports week to promote sporting events.—APP
