Karachi Table Tennis to carry Rs 0.2 million prize money

Karachi—For the first time in history of ping pong in Karachi, 36th edition of Karachi Table Tennis Championship will carry a handsome cash prize money of Rs.200,000, Organizers announced at a news conference on Wednesday at Karachi Club.
Rotary International, one of the leading social service organizations of the world, has joined hands with the Karachi Table Tennis Association (KTTA) in the conduct of the championship to be staged here at Islamia Club, from May 23 to 29.
Governor, District 3270, Rotary International (Pakistan-Afghanistan) Aziz Memon announced here on Wednesday that Rotary will continue supporting the sport of table tennis in the future as well.
“Rotary will extend its support to the future editions of the Karachi Table Tennis Championships as well” he said.
He said Table Tennis is an important game and we look forward to working with its federation in taking it to another level who was himself a table tennis champion in his younger days.
Chairman KTTA, Dr. Farhan Essa said that already a record number of entries have been received for the seven-day event.
“Although the deadline for submission of entries is still a couple of hours away we have crossed the figure of 500 thus setting a new record for the number of participants in the Karachi Table Tennis Championships, he maintained.
Farhan Chishti, Chairman, Organizing Committee, informed the reporters that cash prizes were being offered in the Karachi Championships for the first time.
“Cash prizes will be presented to the top four performers in Men’s singles and Women’s singles events. The winner will be awarded Rs 20,000, the runner-up will be getting Rs 12,000 while both the losing semifinalist will be receiving Rs 5,000 each,” he said. he explained.
He informed that the cash awards have been introduced to give incentives to the players leading to participation from a larger pool.
The top performers of boys and girls events will not be awarded cash prizes but they will be presented rubbers for their bats instead Farhan added.
Arif Khan who won double gold medal in 1989 SAF Games in Islamabad Khan, who has been appointed the Organizing Secretary of the championships, felt that the initiatives of the KTTA would be helpful in reviving the game.
Farhan Essa said overall 15 events will be conducted in the championship and top players from Karachi which included holder Khawaja Kashif, Asim Aziz, Zulfiqar Hussain, sisters Ghalia Khurshid and Maliha besides junior international Muhammad Usman will be prominent players to take part in the event.—APP
