38 pc reduction witnessed in fatal road accidents

Islamabad—A significant decrease of 38 per cent was witnessed in the ratio of fatal road accidents during 2008 in Islamabad due to the efforts of Islamabad Traffic Police (ITP).

It was claimed by the Senior Superintendent of Police (Traffic) Muhammad Zubair Hashmi on Wednesday while talking to APP.

The SSP said a significant decrease of 38.71 per cent was witnessed in the ratio of fatal road accidents in the federal capital during 2008 reducing the number to 19 against 31 happened in the corresponding period of 2007.

As many as 21 persons lost their lives in 19 fatal road accidents in Islamabad during 2008, he added.

The SSP said upto 21 non-fatal road accidents occurred during 2008 causing injuries to 30 persons as compared to 39 accidents in the corresponding period of 2007 causing injuries to 81 persons.

In 2008, he said six accidents occurred in January, only one in February, six in March and six in April.

The SSP said there is no alternate to life and Islamabad Traffic Police is making extra ordinary efforts to avoid such mishaps on roads which bring miseries to the family members of the deceased.

He said Islamabad Traffic Police also canceled the driving licenses of 18 persons involved in the fatal road accidents and barred their entrance again on road. Zubair Hashmi said that ITP issued 162793 challans tickets amounting Rs. 40545200 during 2008.

Meanwhile, Islamabad Police have prepared the list of anti- social elements involved in street crimes and strict monitoring of these elements is being ensured.

Moreover, Capital Development Authority and ICT administration have also been directed to ensure the provision of drinking water and other edibles for the protesters at the specified places.—APP
