DCO directs NPIW to complete watercourses lining

Sukkur— District Coordination Officer (DCO) Sukkur, Inamullah Khan Dharejo has directed the Officers of National Programme for Improvement of Watercourses (NPIW) to ensure completion of the target fixed for lining of watercourses in the district by reactivating the field teams.
He made these observations during a briefing given to him by the Regional Director, National Programme for Improvement of Watercourses (NPIW) Sukkur Region, Ahmed Bux Ghumro at DCO Office here.
He briefed the DCO about performance, main objectives and the role of field teams and consultants of NPIW.The Regional Director informed that the programme could be helpful for efficient use of irrigation water thus ensuring 40% to 42% water conservation.
Giving performance of Sukkur district for the year 2007-2008 he said 551 applications for lining of watercourses were received from abadgars, out of which 380 watercourses were taken up.
Formal work of lining was initiated on 221 watercourses and 103 watercourses have been completed so far. In this way Sukkur district has secured fourth position in Sindh, the Regional Director maintained.
The DCO stressed upon the need for organising seminars of growers/ abadgars with special emphasis on social mobilisation by educating the farming community about the importance of the programme. —APP
