Govt to avoid levying new taxes: Ayaz Soomro
Sukkur— Provincial Minister for Law and
Parliamentary Affairs, Muhammad Ayaz Soomro, has said the coalition
government remains committed to resolve the problems of the masses
and is mapping out measures to avoid levying new taxes in the next
budget.“Instead, the policy of broadening the tax net will be
adopted,” he added.
He further said in case of absolute necessity to tax, only the rich
would be considered and added that to increase revenue, tax
recoveries would be ensured. He said rather than emphasising on
general taxation a targeted taxation system would be introduced.
Talking to APP after holding an open katchery at Pakistan Peoples
Party’s district office at Shikarpur on Thursday, the Minister said
despite presence of the enormous challenges, the next provincial
budget would be public-friendly. “It will be our utmost endeavour to
provide more and more relief to the masses,” he said.
Ayaz Soomro said “PPP manifesto will always be followed.” He said
though it has not been finalised which sector would remain the focus
of the government in the next budget, however reports point towards
the education and health sectors.
“Also, all development projects initiated by the previous government
will be reviewed and those found against public interest wil be
halted,” he said. He however continued that the final decision rests
with the Cabinet and the Sindh Chief Minister.
He blamed the previous government for the current food crisis,
price-hike and lawlessness, saying that he had proposed in the first
meeting of the Sindh Cabinet to re-activate Price Control Boards
established in 1997 to tackle all price rise problems.
“The government is considering provision of targeted relief in the
shape of cash awards to the poor, rather than issuing subsidy on
food items,” he added.
About open katcheries, he termed such institutions helpful in easing
the masses inconvenience and reiterated that maximum relief will be
provided to the people. “PPP will solve all the problems,” he added.
At the open court, scores of people vented their anger and were
pacified by the Minister with on-the-spot directives. —APP
