APDM meeting fails to set deadline on judges’ issue

Muhammad Arshad

Islamabad—All Parties Democratic Movement (APDM) on Wednesday could not announce a clear deadline for launching a movement for the restoration of the judges in its meeting held here.
However, the alliance reiterated its full support for lawyers’ movement. “We are not giving any deadline to the government for the reinstatement of deposed judges with a view to give time to the new government to come up to the commitments made to the people in London APC,” remarked APDM Convener Mehmood Khan Achakzai while addressing a news conference along with other leaders of the alliance. “APDM has constituted a committee to convene national conference for creating consensus among all the stakeholders over the issue of movement for the reinstatement of deposed judges,” added Achakzai. Achakzai reminded the ruling coalition of their commitments to the nation for the restoration of judiciary, constitution as it was on October 12, 1999, and impeachment of President Pervez Musharraf.
“The coalition partners had agreed in London APC that they would restore constitution to pre October 12, 1999, reinstate judges and impeach the President Pervez Musharraf who won election due to his Army Chief’s status,” Achakzai remarked.
“The meeting also expressed concerns over the sky rocketing corruption, power load-shedding, price hike and law and order situation in the country and especially in Balochistan,” Achakzai told newsmen. The declaration issued after the meeting demanded the impeachment of President Pervez Musharraf, reinstatement of deposed judges through an executive order from the Prime Minister.
The ruling coalition possesses the required two-third majority in the both houses of the parliament for the impeachment of the President, the declaration stated.
The meeting also condemned massive use of force in tribal areas, Swat and Balochistan and demanded that the issues should be resolved through negotiations. The meeting demanded ban on MQM for being stooges of terrorist forces, release of political activists and Dr Abdul Qadeer Khan. Almost 31 leaders from component parties of the alliance participated in the meeting.
