Consequences of clash of institutions

PAKISTAN’S history is replete with incidents when it suffered the most due to clash of interests among various organs of the State yet unfortunately we never learnt a lesson and kept on repeating those mistakes just for the sake of ego.
It however augurs well that Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani while talking to media persons in Lahore on Saturday emphatically stated that the elected government does not want any confrontation between various state institutions. In the present scenario, when there is a deadlock between the two coalition partners i.e. PPP and PML(N) and entire country has been made hostage to differences in opinion on the restoration of the deposed judges, any hasty decision without considering the pros and cons could again lead to clash among institutions. It was timely that the Prime Minister made it clear that no proposal was under consideration regarding two Supreme Courts and their objective was independence of judiciary. This clarification should put to rest all speculations yet a way has to be found to come out of the imbroglio and that is possible if both sides show flexibility in their stand. This crisis has all the potential of repetition of the failed decade of 90s and the electorates want the major parties to work in cohesion for a democratic and progressive Pakistan. The two parties and their leadership suffered a lot during the last eight years and they must not waste the opportunity offered to them by the people. Judges restoration is perhaps one of the most important issues yet there are many other challenges like deteriorating economy, price hike, poverty, unemployment and energy crises which deserve urgent attention. As mentioned by the State Bank Governor Dr. Shamshad Akhtar one of the reasons for depreciation in rupee value is uncertain political situation and this decrease would go on if the two parties failed to find an urgent solution and break the deadlock. We expect and pray that better sense prevail and Asif Ali Zardari and Mian Mohammad Nawaz Sharif would show statesmanship and through give and take policy be able to find a solution that ensures smooth functioning of institutions of the State because any diversion from this path of consolidating undiluted democracy will be fatal for the destiny of our nation.
