rolled through Moscow’s Red Square in the annual
Victory Day parade Friday, reviving a tradition
of the Soviet era and demonstrating Russia’s
growing military confidence.
Mogadishu, Somalia—Police fortified their
headquarters Friday in fear of another attack
after Islamist fighters raided the station in
the heart of the government’s Mogadishu
stronghold. The insurgents have tried many times
to attack the heavily guarded K4 district but
Thursday’s raid was their first major success.
Jerusalem— Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert
was facing mounting calls for his resignation on
Friday over a criminal probe into allegations he
took bribes from a millionaire US financier.
Beijing— The United States is offering to help
China in its fight against a viral infection
that has killed 34 children, including two

others.
THE US Secretary of State c has visited
Israel/Palestine no fewer than 15 times in the
past 15 months - and has virtually nothing to
show for it. Her diplomacy has been an exercise
in futility. Far from contributing to a
resolution of the conflict, she has unwittingly
demonstrated America’s striking loss of
influence - not least with its Israeli ally. She
has also not escaped personal humiliation.
