Rabbani blames ECP for earlier postponement

Senior Reporter

Islamabad—Secretary, Election Commission of Pakistan, Kanwar Muhammad Dilshad has announced that the Election Commission of Pakistan has issued revised schedule for by-elections, 2008.
According to a notification issued here on Wednesday by the Chief Election Commissioner in respect of vacant seats in the National Assembly as well as all the four Provincial Assemblies, poll for the by-election 2008 will be held on 26 June. Kanwar Muhammad Dilshad said that nomination papers would be filed from 8 to 13 May.
Scrutiny of nomination papers will be held by the Returning Officers from 14 to 20 May.
The last date for filing of appeals regarding nomination papers is 24 May. Last date for withdrawal of candidature is June 2.
The Secretary Election Commission clarified that the candidates who have filed Nomination Papers with the Returning Officers concerned by the 5th of May 2008 needed not file Nomination Papers afresh.
However, the candidates who filed their Nomination Papers on the 6th of May, will be required to file their Nomination Papers afresh. Meanwhile, leader of the House in Senate, Raza Rabbani has held Election Commission as solely responsible for postponement of scheduled by-elections.
Answering the point-of -order of Haji Adeel in the Senate, he said that government had absolutely no inkling about the by-elections being postponed, and even the PM had expressed his ignorance about the postponement of by-elections.
He strongly negated the statement of Election Commission, according to which the NWFP government had advised the postponement, since these by-elections were being held countrywide.
He announced that interior advisor had sent a report to the PM regarding law and order situation in provinces, and whatever the reaction of the PM, would be made public in the House.
He denied that the government had advised the postponement, and said that even the Election Commission failed to take political leaders into confidence over the issue.
