Nepalese media delegation meets Ebad
Media plays an important role in moulding public opinion


Karachi—Sindh Governor, Dr Ishrat-ul-Ebad Khan, has said that despite tremendous growth in electronic media, the print media has its established significance and plays an important role in moulding the public opinion.
Talking to a 6-member Nepalese media delegation at Governor House, he said that electronic media has made very fast progress in Pakistan and just within 5 years over 50 channels are operating today while more were in the pipeline.

Division bench suspends order of SHC CJ

Karachi—A division bench of High Court of Sindh (SHC) comprising senior most judge of SHC, Justice Azizullah M. Memon and Justice Khalid Ali Z. Kazi on Wednesday suspended an order passed by Chief Justice Muhammad Afzal Soomro who disposed of a judicial miscelaneous application in Tessori gold case. The bench suspending the order, fixed May 28 for hearing of the appeal filed by appellant Hanif Merchant, a partner of Tessori Private Limited, a company registered under Companies Act. The appellant earlier challenged the winding up of the company and matter was pending adjudication before a companies judge of SHC (Justice Khalid Ali Z Kazi). Earlier Anwar Mansoor Khan, counsel for appellant narrated the events since April 25 concering the judicial miscelaenous including expression of no-confidence in Chief Justice and request to fix the matter before a division bench of SHC except Justice Muhammad Afzal Soomro.

Chief Minister briefed on Home Department
Qaim stresses to reactivate Civil Defence Department


Karachi—Sindh Chief Minister, Syed Qaim Ali Shah, Wednesday had a presentation on Home Department at Chief Minister House. Provincial Home Secretary, Arif Khan while briefing the Chief Minister informed that sanctioned strength of Home Department is 350 personnel while Sindh Police has 98.148 personnel out of which 87,453 are working with 10,695 vacancies vacant in various cadres. He said Sindh has a total of 472 police stations, out of which 102 are in Karachi, 174 in Hyderabad and 196 in Sukkur Regions. He said 21,806 personnel of Pakistan Rangers are working in Sindh province. Of them 14,406 are deployed for internal security, 996 for educational institutions, 803 for oil & gas companies, 801 for foreign consulates/residences. He said their annual budget for the year 2007-08 stood at Rs.410.103 million.

KCCI endorses strike call by furniture dealers

Karachi—The Karachi Chamber of Commerce and Industry has endorsed the strike call given by Furniture Dealers Association for Friday to protest against the killing of Shaikh Saleem Anwar of Manzoor Colony Furniture Market some days ago. An emergency meeting was called by KCCI to give re-action on this incident and chalk out future strategy to ensure security to the business community.

Order by CJ in Tessori case as per law, says CJ’s spokesman

Karachi—The Chief Justice of High Court of Sindh Muhammad Afzal Soomro has passed the orders strictly as per law and the aggrieved party is giving it an unfair twist. This was stated in an official denial issued here Wednesday under the signature of Private Secretary to Chief Justice with reference to alleged Reference sent by Hanif Merchant’s lawyer Anwar Mansoor Khan advocate to Supreme Judicial Council (SJC) against Chief Justice of SHC.
