PIMS doctors performs sensitive surgery

SHR Jahfery

Islamabad—Executive Director Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) Dr. Abdul Majeed Rajput reiterated that a full designated department of minimal access surgery will be established soon in the Institute.

He appreciated the initiative and efforts of Dr. S H Waqar in the laparoscopic surgery and assured his full support and cooperation for the promotion and improvement of his innovative work and expertise in the profession. Minimal Access Surgery is being performed at PIMS on regular basis. The unit is lead by Professor M A Zahid and Dr S H Waqar.

Dr S H Waqar of Minimal Access Surgery Unit (MASU) performed laparoscopic cholecystectomy at the hospital using only two ports in a middle aged female patient admitted with diagnosis of gall-stones.

This is probably the first ever case performed by this technique in Pakistan. The operation was performed on April 30 this year, and took about an hour. The patient remained well and satisfied after this operation and was discharged from hospital next day.

Laparoscopic cholecystectomy is now established as a standard procedure for gall-stone disease all over the world. This operation is usually performed through three or four ports.
