Dar sets the right standards

FINANCE Minister Ishaq Dar has refused to indulge in a blame game with the previous rulers saying he would say nothing about domestic happenings on the foreign soil. Mr Dar who is quite critical and may be rightly so, about the performance of the previous Government, sounded very positive in Washington when he spurned all questions by Pakistani media persons relating to economic policies of his predecessors and that is the right approach that we should not wash our dirty linen abroad.

It had remained a tradition and hallmark of our political culture to malign Pakistan and political parties for their actions on foreign soil when a leader had gone on a visit by making press statements and holding demonstrations in favour or against. Nobody cared that we were in fact bringing a bad name to our motherland by these acts in the eyes of foreigners. Even today there is deep political divide among overseas Pakistanis instead of unity under our flag. Traditional Pakistan Independence Day parade in New York on 14th August is organized separately due to political divisions making Pakistan a laughing stock. Contrary to that every one recognizes that Indians when they leave their country cease to be workers of any party and act in unison like true Indian nationals. As a result they have a greater say and a strong lobby which serves the interest of their country. Divided on party lines, Pakistanis on the other hand have no say and their groups cannot effectively lobby for the interest of their country in the American corridors of power. Mr Ishaq Dar who is perceived as an articulate, eloquent, energetic and hard-working individual and practising Muslim set a good tradition for others to emulate by not maligning his countrymen in a foreign country. Pakistan’s face had been blackened too much in the past and we appeal every one to follow the footsteps of Ishaq Dar and mudslinging for political gains should come to an end once and for all times.
