Staff Reporter
Karachi—Pakistan Navy Ship Karrar, the second Multi Role Tactical
Platform (MRTP-33) was commissioned into Pakistan Navy at an
impressive ceremony held on Friday at PN Dockyard.
The Chief of the Naval Staff, Admiral Muhammad Afzal Tahir, was the
chief guest, says an ISPR (Navy) press release.
It said that the Attack Craft acquired from Turkey is planned to be
fitted with requisite guns and missiles commensurate with its role
of coastal defence/offensive operations. The craft is designed for
fast attacks, maritime interdiction operations, contact probing and
protection of coastal installations.
It has high stealth characteristics and can carry surface-to-surface
missiles and guns. Speaking on the occasion, Admiral Muhammad Afzal
Tahir said that a large number of mega projects related to ship
construction and ports are indicators of the rapid growth in the
maritime sector.
These developments have not only enhanced the economic activity in
coastal areas but also increased the responsibilities of Pakistan
Navy to provide seaward defence. Availability of these sophisticated
platforms to the Fleet Commander will provide him greater
flexibility in execution of his tasks.
The chief guest further said that the near permanent shape of
coalition maritime campaign is an indicator of unpredictable
maritime environment. This does not allow to lower our guard. He
also thanked the Turkish government for providing all assistance in
strengthening Pakistan Navy defence needs.
