Blame game will promote anarchy

THE unfortunate incidents in Karachi and Lahore have led to accusations and counter accusations by political rivals and blame of hidden hand behind these events is a cause of serious concern. The Opposition accuses the Government that political opponents are being victimized and those at the helm of affairs say that vested interests are behind these troubles.

In Pakistan unfortunately the easiest thing is to raise accusing finger against each other and nobody is ready to take responsibility. It was the duty of the new Government in Sindh to ensure security of Dr Arbab Ghulam Rahim after the first day incident inside the Assembly building while the Caretaker Government in Punjab should have taken immediate action after the trouble started in the case of Dr Sher Afgan Khan Niazi. Over and above this, the clashes between rival lawyers groups in Karachi in a tense atmosphere added fuel to the fire and innocent lives were lost. Opposition leader in the National Assembly Chaudhry Pervaiz Elahi led his coalition to walk out of the House for a boycott of the proceedings against what he called the injustices and excesses against the Opposition. Prime Minister Syed Yousaf Raza Gillani had come prepared and made a very important statement in the House saying he was convinced that these acts are being fuelled by those who do not want democracy to flourish and derail the process. The Prime Minister vowed not to allow the anti-democratic forces to succeed in their unholy attempts. The Leader of the Opposition and his deputy earlier also affirmed their Party’s adherence to the reconciliation process and spoke of a conspiracy at work while referring to the mobs roughing up Arbab Rahim and Sher Afgan Niazi. Every one knew that there will be trouble in the beginning because those now in the Government had suffered for nine long years and they have some genuine grievances. However this is not time to settle scores but work in a way which could help flourish the democratic system. For this a specific culture of tolerance and live and let live need to be adopted. This particularly needs to be followed by those in the Government as they owe a greater responsibility and keep in view that in a barren terrain while planting a sapling one has to be extra careful to ensure that it blossoms despite unfavourable environment. Mere blame game will promote anarchy and lead the nation nowhere. It is time that every body should pursue democratic norms because a collective approach is the only way to ensure sustainable democracy.
