Taliban’s march on roads of Swat

THERE are disturbing and depressing signals from Swat where the situation had improved a lot in recent weeks. According to reports, armed supporters of Maulana Fazlullah reappeared in the Matta tehsil of Swat and were seen marching on the roads on Wednesday.

Though the number of Taliban was somewhat negligible - between 40 to 45 yet the very fact that the armed militants came out in open amounts to defying the writ of the Government. This is particularly worrisome because of the fact that the new political leadership has expressed its commitment to pursue the process of dialogue and discussions to resolve the problem of militancy and extremism in the area and the adjoining FATA region. We have been opposing vehemently the use of force in the area, as it was drifting the local population away from the national mainstream. It is also encouraging that the new provincial Government too has initiated a process of reconciliation and only the other day the Provincial Assembly formed a Jirga for negotiations with extremists in Swat. In this backdrop, we expect that the extremists too would change their behaviour and approach and would not indulge in any provocative act that could jeopardize the fragile peace in the area. While the entire nation backs political dialogue, the militants too should demonstrate their willingness to respond in a positive manner. We also hope that instead of entering into another phase of strikes, boycotts and marches and counter marches, the political forces would get united to face the threat of extremism and terrorism.
