Khushab nuclear plant gas leak kills 2
Situation under control

Islamabad—A gas leak killed two workers at a nuclear plant undergoing annual maintenance Tuesday, Pakistani officials said.

The Khushab heavy water plant was shut down for maintenance when the gas leaked, the Pakistan Atomic Energy Commission said.

“All necessary steps were taken, including evacuation of personnel as a precautionary measure,” it said. Police near the facility say they were advised by plant officials to prepare buses for a wider evacation, but then were told they would not be needed.

“Situation was immediately brought under control, but two workers lost their lives while controlling the incident. There is no threat to public life,” the Atomic Energy Commission said. It said the leaking gas was burnet off by plant equipment.

APP adds: Pakistan Atomic Energy Commission Tuesday clarified that there was no threat to public life from gas leakage from Khushab Heavy Water plant.

“There is no threat to public life as all the leakage gas has been burnt in the flare system of the plant,” said a PAEC statement about gas leakage incident at Khushab heavy water plant.

It stated that on April 08, 2008 afternoon, while the Khushab heavy water plant was under annual maintenance and under shut-down status, an incident of gas leakage occurred, which was immediately addressed by the safety & Fire Protection Division.

All necessary steps were taken to protect the plant, including evacuation of personnel as a precautionary measure, in accordance with the SOP. Situation was immediately brought under control and two workers lost their lives while controlling the incident. The orders have been passed by the competent authority for inquiry to find out possible causes of the incident.
