All set to launch CNG bus service in twin-cities

Islamabad—The Capital Development Authority is all set to launch a modern transport service for the twin cities of Islamabad and Rawalpindi under which about 300 CNG buses would be plied in one go in the initial phase, official sources at the Authority said Tuesday.

The official said it would be a joint venture between the Authority and Midway Consortium comprising three transport giants of Pakistan.

The project has been sent to the Board of Investment that would review the feasibility as well as terms and conditions going to be defined between the civic body and the private companies. He said once the Authority gets nod from the BoI, it would launch the project without any delay.

“There is no hitch on our end. We are ready to launch the multi-million project but after the positive report of the Board. It would be launched during the current year,” he hoped.

After receiving green signal from the BoI, the Board of Directors would define the terms and conditions of the contract between the stakeholder those are going to execute the first ever joint venture project in the federal capital.

The consortium has been selected from a dozen of interested parties. Replying to a question, he said the Daewoo didn’t show interest in the project as it has no policy to share the terminal with other companies.

The project is a small component of the Authority’s Mass Transit System that is yet in the designing phase. The mass transit system would comprise buses, mono-trains and tubes and would be a durable solution for the transport-related problems of the twin cities.

When asked he said the Authority has not yet constructed any bus terminal for the new service, however, he said it would be constructed shortly.

The Authority would build a first ever multi-storey transport terminal in sector I-11 where it would provide all the facilities including, bank, inn, food outlets, hotels, mosques, proper parking place, workshops and services stations.

Soon after the launch of the project, the company would ply the buses on all main routes of the twin cities including Rawalpindi, Sadar, Pak Secretariat, Peshawar Mor, Karachi Company, Faisal Mosque and Pirwadhai.

The official said the new transport service would be a modern one. Proper bus stops and ticket booth would be constructed throughout the twin cities.

The addition in the number of buses would be proportional to the demand as the twin cities are witnessing a dramatic increase in the population.—APP
