Provocative statement of North Korea

NORTH Korea has threatened to crush South Korea amid rising tension on the divided peninsula. According to North’s main official newspaper Rodong Shinmun, the South Korean Government of President Lee Myung-bak is following the US imperialists who intend to attack the North with its nuclear weapons.

This is not for the first time that North Korea has issued such a provocative statement against the South. Earlier too on many occasions it threatened to annihilate South Korea and the rhetoric is not restricted to Seoul only as it also lashes out at Japan with regular intervals. North Korea might have some grievances and threats could be linked to well-thought-out tactics but such provocation creates tension and instability in the Korean peninsula. We are sorry to point out that such things would add to the woes of North Korea itself, which is already in trouble on various accounts especially because of its nuclear programme. Otherwise too, this is not the era of threats and wars and barring the United States and its allies and Israel, other countries are now laying stress on good neighbourly relations. The countries of the world are developing closer economic relationship for their mutual advantage and it is also in the interest of North Korea to adopt similar approach with its neighbours. We fail to understand why Pyongyong has adopted aggressive posture towards its neighbours that are quoted as model of economic development. South Korea and Japan are treading the path of democracy and liberal economic policies assigning due role to the private sector to make contribution in national development. By changing its policy, the ROK too can transform the lot of its people and achieve heights of economic glory. Threats would only complicate things and provide excuse to some foreign powers to have greater involvement in the region, which is being resisted by the North.
