Al Shifa introduces latest
corneal treatment facility
Islamabad—The Al-Shifa Trust Eye Hospital has introduced latest
corneal treatment facility called Corneal Collagen cross linkage (CXL)
for patients who suffer from Keratoconus.
It is a disease in which the front layer of the eye becomes conical
and thin. Sharing details of the achievement, the head of the
department of cornea and chief consultant of Al-Shifa Trust Eye
Hospital, Professor Dr. Wajid Ali Khan said, “This latest treatment
aims at halting the progress of the disease.
Since it is a disease which primarily affects young patients, it
will tremendously benefit many young patients, who will be cured
with this treatment option”, a private TV reported.
Talking about the disease, Professor Dr. Wajid said, “Keratoconus is
a disease of the cornea in which the front layer of the eye becomes
conical and thin, leading to gradual deterioration of the eye sight,
to the extent that a corneal transplant becomes imminent for
restoration of vision.”
He further said that Keratoconus is a common corneal problem in
Pakistan, especially in the Northern Areas. Its incidence varies
from 1:400 to 1:1000 populations.
He said, it is also associated with allergic conditions of the eye
and also with some diseases that can affect other parts of the body.
However, he said, it is mostly developmental. According to Professor
Wajid, this latest treatment is presently offered only in a few
centres around the world and now Al-Shifa Trust is one of them.
Professor Dr. Wajid further said that Al-Shifa Trust has procured
all necessary equipment for this purpose and treatment is carried
out routinely.—APP
