Rawalakot girls college to start functioning today

Islamabad—The Post Graduate Girls College in Rawalakot, which was severely damaged by the devastating earthquake of October 2005, has been renovated with the help of Turkey and now it is ready to start its classes in the repaired building.

According to Turkish embassy, the Turkish people were the first to help their Pakistani brothers after the earthquake in 2005 and the domain of Turkish help was not limited by the boundaries of Turkey.

The Turkish community living abroad also reacted at the same time with their mother country. The Turkish people living in Germany through a joint organization of IHLAS Media Holding of Germany and DITIB (Religious Affairs of Turkish Islamic Union Germany) agreed on the reconstruction of Rawalakot Post Graduate Girls College with ERRA.

Later on Turkish Islamic Union of Netherlands participated through donations of Basic Health Unit facilities to the said school.

The design of the school, construction, decoration and landscaping have been carried out by TURCON Pvt Ltd. After geological survey of the land, it has been decided to construct single or maximum two storey buildings. In a campus-wise set up, all the buildings have been scattered on a 240,000 sq ft area.

The education facilities include 30 classrooms, 5 laboratories, Gymnasium Hall, Hostel, Residence for Teachers, Principle House, Basic Health Unit, Mosque, Multi Purpose Hall, Admin Block, etc. Total 14 buildings exceeding a covered area of 60,000 sq ft have been built for the school. The construction has been carried out in the conventional method, i.e. R.C.C. framed structure. Both ends of the buildings have been extra strengthened through shear walls, providing an earthquake proof structure for the safety of the children.

The materials used in construction are the same as in the developed western countries. Light weight insulated “shingle” roof material has been imported and used for the first time in Pakistan in order to present comfortable rooms for students and teachers. Well insulated U-PVC type windows have also been used.—APP
