Commendable initiative
Abdul Rashid
Pakistan is passing through a very difficult phase of its national
life. This calls for a concrete effort on the part of all patriotic
Pakistanis to promote an environment that encourages peace and
brotherhood amongst citizens of the country. The need of the hour is
to strongly discourage those unscrupulous elements who are trying to
spread discord and dissatisfaction among the masses. However, all is
not lost and it is good to see that our society is awake and conscious
of the need to strengthen national solidarity and reinforce the
harmony that exists between the people across the country. One is
particularly happy to see that a leading producer and marketer of milk
in the country has invited prominent people from various sections of
society to extend a message of peace and harmony to people. These
messages of national motivation coming from celebrities like Fatima
Suraiya, Jimmy Engineer, Inzamam-ul-haq, Qazi Wajid, Hasina Moeen,
Samiullah and many others from all walks of like, and seen on various
TV channels, are very timely and serve to create that crucial bond
between the people that, unfortunately, our politicians have never
paid attention to. One would like to congratulate the company for
taking this important initiative at a time when it is most needed. It
is hoped that other leading brand names will also join this national
effort.

Recovery of public money
Engr S T Hussain
I am a senior citizen and taxpayer, I would like to know how much
public money has been spent on President, Prime Minister, Federal
Ministers, Provincial Ministers etc during the last five years by PML-Q
government. As the result of their five years rule, there is shortage
of everything. The common man is groaning under the burden of rising
prices and people with lessening income are helpless spectators. What
beneficial services have been rendered by the President and Prime
Minister to the nation that they spend billions on foreign tours? This
public money must be recovered from them, if they were really sincere,
honest in serving the country, they should have visited abroad on
their own expenses after all they are quite rich. After recovering the
amount from them, it should be spent in building the orphanage hostels
and hospitals in rural areas of Pakistan.

Price hike
Noor Din
Mr Musharraf and his caretaker government has sent shiver in the poor
with more bombshell by increasing prices of petroleum products,
electricity etc. This step will kill them completely. The half hungry
will become 90%hungry turning into more dangerous men already one of
the major cause of heightened terrorism, law and order situation. This
has been gift of Mr. Mushraff and his imported managers for the last
nine years. Yet he and his ‘messiah projecting club of few
correspondents in mass dailies, in their website present him as
indispensable. In this club are few TV anchorpersons have played
extremely dangerous role in last few years and once again after
elections to push their vested views supporting Mr Mushraff and a
political group of Karachi. It should stop now.
For last nine years we were only ruled by Mushraffs’ day dreaming,
whims and fancies sinking the nation to quagmires suiting Mushraff and
his King Party. Why not hold referendum on 58-2B,restoring ousted
judiciary, continuation of Mushraff as President and other legal
issues bedevilling the nation by the cronies of Mushraff. Before the
purposed Referendum; Mr Mushraff and his office is put in abeyance and
acting President takes oath of the new elected representatives. This
will immediately resolve many complicated issue faced by PPP.ML-N, ANP
to put the democratic process back on rails.

Devoid of courage
S Hussain
Our ruling class is completely devoid of moral courage. General
Musharraf wants to remain president even after losing the moral ground
following the defeat of the PML-Q in the February 18 general election.
Instead of showing grace as a retired army general, he is behaving
like a power-seeking politician. General Musharraf ruled the country
against the wishes of the people. He damaged the integrity of the
federation and it will be in the supreme national interest if he
decides to resign as president now. He said on record that he would
resign if he felt he was not popular among the people anymore. The
king’s party and its policies have been rejected by the people in the
election and now the president should keep his word and leave the
presidency. But it seems that he lacks moral courage to take
responsibility for the damage he has done to the country during the
last nine years. He is yet again trying to arrange a coalition
government of his choice by attempting to create rifts between the PML-N
and the PPP.

Moral anarchy
Aftab Ahmad Khan
The mixture of crime and politics has unfortunately added more knots
to an already tangled situation with the distressing consequence that
today we have to contend with a convoluted order—amoral, brutal,
cynical and perverse. It is the fervent hope and prayer of the silent
majority of law-abiding citizens that our recently elected political
leaders will find time to consider and effectively tackle the law and
order problem, which is the fundamental duty of a government. History
tells us that a society prone to maladministration and legal breakdown
is not only characterized by poor economic performance but is also
without nobility, morality and intellect.

Undue interference
Shakir Lakhani
Although the people rejected President Musharraf and his allies in the
general election, Americans are not happy with the future political
setup in Pakistan. They probably think that President Musharraf is
indispensable for Pakistan. Therefore, they have been pressuring both
Asif Zardari and Nawaz Sharif to let Pervez Musharraf continue as
president. If our leaders were to act on foreign diktats, what was the
point in holding a general election? Why were millions of rupees spent
in the electoral process if the elected representatives can’t take
decisions themselves? Why doesn’t the US tell India as to who should
become its president or prime minister? There is only one way forward:
unconditional restoration of the sacked judges and plunderers’
accountability for their corruption during the past five years.
