A 119-member Pakistani contingent would be participating in the 5th Asian Indoor and Martial Arts Games scheduled to be held at Ashgabat, Turkmenistan from September 17 to 27.
The 119-member Pakistani contingent includes Contingent Officials (12), Athletics (14), Billiards Sports (4), Ju-Jitsu (16), Swimming (10), Taekwondo (12), Tennis (7), Weightlifting (5), Wrestling (9) and Belt Wrestling (30), said a press release issued here.
It may be mentioned here that earlier both Asian Martial Arts Games and Asian Indoor Games were organized separately.
The First Asian Martial Arts Games were organized at Bangkok (Thailand) in August 2009. A 36-member Pakistan Contingent participated in the event and secured three gold, two silver and four bronze medals.
In the Asian Indoor Games held in Bangkok in 2005 Pakistan secured a single silver medal while in the Games held in Macau in 2007 Pakistan bagged two medals (one silver and one bronze medal). Pakistan did not participated in the third edition of the Asian Indoor Games that was held in Hanoi in 2009.
However, the Fourth Edition of the Asian Indoor Games was scheduled at Doha (Qatar) but the Qatar Olympic Committee officially surrendered to host the Games.
In response, the Olympic Council of Asia (OCA) decided that 2009 Asian Indoor Games would be the last edition of the games and then the Asian Indoor Games and Asian Martial Arts Games were combined. Its inaugural event was held in Incheon, South Korea in 2013 but Pakistan Contingent could not participate.
In 2010, OCA, the National Olympic Committee of Turkmenistan and the administration of Ashgabat city signed an agreement to stage the 5th Asian Indoor & Martial Arts Games during September, 2017. Accordingly the Games are being organized from September 17 to 27 at Ashgabat.
In addition to Asian countries, for the first time in the history of the Asian Indoor and Martial Arts Games, Oceania has been included in these Games, bringing the participating countries to 62.—APP
